Special Education or Learning Academy?

Are you a parent on the IEP or 504 journey with your child who has attention challenges, neurodevelopmental delays or dyslexia in its various forms? Does your child receive services in the Special Education room at their school? It’s a rollercoaster of a ride, and a constantly changing journey.

Have you felt the conflicting emotions of being grateful to have accommodations and help for your child to succeed in the traditional classroom, and frustration in knowing that more can be done to help him or her? It is a tough place to advocate from.

The Chatterbox Learning Academy is not a replacement for Special Education in school. It’s not an either/or proposition. We serve many clients in the Learning Academy who are being simultaneously served by Special Education in their school. The Learning Academy and Special Education aren’t comparable!

As a reminder, Special Education:

  • provides academic services for a child to be able to function in a school setting

  • is instruction typically provided in a small group

  • provides supports and modifications for the symptoms of a learning challenge

You can think of it like a bandage for a wound. It will help stop the bleeding and provide protection, but doesn’t actually heal the injury.

On the other hand, the Learning Academy is a specialized neurocognitive training program that:

  • remediates attention & learning challenges

  • is conducted via one-on-one individualized therapy

  • treats the root cause of learning struggles as well as any affected academic areas

You can think of the Learning Academy like getting stitches for a wound. It helps stop the bleeding, but also heals the skin so that a bandage is no longer needed. The goal of the Learning Academy, after remediating deficits, is to build up a students’ skills and academics so that they make much progress beyond needing or qualifying for an IEP/504.
